How to choose analytics for a SaaS product

A practical checklist for founders comparing privacy, real-time data, funnels, and uptime before you wire tracking into production.

Most teams pick analytics based on a pricing page and a demo video. Six months later they are exporting CSVs to answer basic funnel questions. Start with the decisions you will actually make every week.

Define the questions first

Write down five metrics you would check after a deploy: signup conversion, activation, churn signals, traffic sources, and error spikes. If a tool cannot answer those without a warehouse, it will not survive your first growth sprint.

Privacy and compliance

Cookieless sessions, hashed identifiers, and ingest-time redaction reduce consent friction. Confirm where data is stored, how long it is retained, and whether export is opt-in. Your privacy policy should match what the product actually does.

Analytics plus uptime

Traffic drops can mean a broken deploy or a DNS issue. Running analytics and HTTP monitors in one project means one on-call rotation and one status page when customers ask if you are down.
